Some of the Greyhounds currently looking for new homes.
Roy is a handsome black ex-racing greyhound who was born in September 2007. He weighs 34.5k, has a gorgeous nature and is a very loveable and playful lad. He loves laying on his back on the settee, going for walks he's super on the lead and travels well in a car. He is house trained, neutered, inoculated and microchipped.
Roy's one 'down-side' is his obsession for searching the kitchen work surfaces for food - even the smallest scrap on a plate or spoon. He is so crafty he won't do it while we are around, but turn our back for one second and he's in there. In a previous life he would have made the perfect pickpocket or shoplifter and we wouldn't be at all surprised if he wasn't 'the Artful Dodger' from Oliver Twist! However, we are working with him so he will be able to live amongst food rather than having to steal all in sight. |
| Roy, although okay with other breeds of dogs when they are ten feet away is still wary of loose dogs running around his feet, but then many dogs don't like this and in time and with more socialisation this may improve. - can you help us find him a new home? |
| Duke is our 132nd Greyhound to foster. He is a handsome blue ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 23rd April 2006. He is house trained, inoculated, microchipped and neutered. Duke loves playing with his toys, especially balls, is lovely in the house, has a quiet nature and is alright with children. When he first arrived we were told he was okay with other breeds of dogs, but this we are not now so sure about, so we are monitoring him as he is being socialised because it seems he is frightned of them when they jump about and make noises. Duke was Wendy's first greyhound to foster, but when we discovered his fear of other breeds of dogs he came to us to foster along with our greyhounds because of our experience and we will work with him to help him overcome his problem - |
| Duke is a lovely boy and we are looking for a family who can continue the work we are doing with him - can you help us find him his forever home? |
| Tigger is a 9 year old brindle greyhound who is being fostered with Peter, Anne and their three dogs. Tigger has spent most of his life on a farm before coming into an animal rescue centre after killing the farm cat. Town life is quite alien to him, and being re-homed and returned after just a month it was deemed in Tigger's best interest he come into the Retired Greyhound Trust to be fostered until he finds a new home - can you help us find him that new forever home? |
| Our 133rd Greyhound to foster is Goldie who is a small fawn ex-racing greyhound who was born in January 2001 and who finished her racing career at the age of 7 when she hurt her back right leg. She has a lovely character, loves meeting people, walks nicely on the lead and travels well in the car. She has been living with the same person since a puppy and was living in retirement in kennels until she had to leave, so came to us to foster - can you help us find her a nice home for her twilight years? |
| Tina (2) is a beautiful small white and black ex-racing greyhound who is approximately 3 years old. She is currently being fostered with Julia, her family and 3 dogs (labrador and 2 lurchers). She weighs 24.2k, is house trained, spayed, microchipped and her inoculations are being brought up to date as she came with no paperwork. Tina (2) has a pretty face, a lovely sweet nature, and from what we've been told she is okay with other breeds of dogs and children, travels well in the car and walks nicely on the lead. - can you help us find her a new home? |
| Pop (Duke) is a small black ex-racing greyhound who is approximately 3 years old and weighs 28k. He is currently being fostered with Pauline, Colin, their family and several other greyhounds and whippets. Pop (Duke) has a lovely nature and from what we've been told he is okay with children and other breeds of dogs. He is microchipped, walks nicely on the lead and travels well in the car. Pop (Duke) is neutered and his inoculations are being brought up to date because he came with no paperwork - can you help us find him a new home? |
| Pebbles is a beautiful blue 19 month old Greyhound who was found wandering the streets of Antrim and taken to the local dog pound who asked if we could foster her and find her a new home. She came with final stage glaucoma in her left eye leaving no option but to remove it, which has now been done. Her other eye is perfect. Pebbles is a lovely, friendly and playful girl who is being fostered with Wendy, her family and their two greyhounds. She is beginning to enjoy this new world she is now in, walks lovely on the lead and travels well in a car - can you help us find her a new home? |
| Gypsy is a beautiful golden brindle ex-racing greyhound who is 5 years old. She is currently being fostered with Pat, her family and 2 dogs (greyhound and whippet). She is house trained, spayed, microchipped and inoculated. Gypsy has a lovely sweet nature, is okay with other breeds of dogs and children, travels well in the car and walks nicely on the lead. - can you help us find her a new home? |
| Angel is our 135th Greyhound to foster. She is an ex-racing greyhound who is 3 years old and weighs approximately 58 lbs (26.3k). She walks nicely on the lead, travels well in a car and from what we've been told she is alright with children and other breeds of dogs. Angel is, as her previous owner says is and angel!. - can you help us find her a new forever home? |
| Tom is a loving, affectionate and obedient greyhound who was born in October 2007 and weighs 30k. He is currently with his racing owner awaiting an opportunity to come into a foster home here until we |
| can find him a new forever home. Tom particularly loved his racing, but also his food and a comfy pillow upon which to rest his head. His racing owners will miss him hugely and are very keen that he finds the home comforts that he so richly deserves. He has a nice nature, walks nicely on the lead, travels well in the car and from what we've been told is okay with other breeds of dogs and children. He will make someone a wonderful companion. - can you help us find him a new home? |

ABOUT US: We've had greyhounds since April 1997 and between July 2004 and November 2009 we fostered 82 greyhounds for Dumfriesshire and Cumbria Greyhound Rescue. At the beginning of December 2009 we began fostering for the Retired Greyhound Trust (RGT) and established their SOUTH LAKES branch.
Being in the South Lakes we are situated at the southern end of the English Lake District in Cumbria at Witherslack, which is half way between Kendal and Grange-over-Sands. As fosterers it is our passion to help greyhounds through the transition stage from kennels to home life, helping them to adapt to the family way of life and being part of our family until they find their forever homes. |

Greyhounds make wonderful pets. They are for life, not just for racing. They all deserve a second chance. Greyhounds are elegent, very intelligent, tend to be laid back, lazy if given the chance, need little exercise, often just two, half hour walks a day. Greyhounds thrive on love and affection, adapt quickly to the family way of life and make very gentle and loyal pets.
Over 40,000 Greyhounds are bred each year in the UK and Ireland and thousands of Greyhound puppies and youngsters are put to sleep because they don't make the grade for racing. The average age of a Greyhound coming into 'Rescue' is 3 to 4 years old when they are no longer needed. However, the normal life expectancy of a Greyhound is between 12 and 15 years - the longest living of the larger breeds of dog means they have many years ahead of them once they are no longer needed for racing Only a very small percentage are the lucky ones who are re-homed.

George introduced us to the world
of hounds.
He arrived in April 1997 and
was about 9 years
old when he was
rescued.
He had been badly
treated
and sadly we only had him 3½ months
when he died.
He was our first true love and
he
was our ' Gentleman George'.

Bobby and Penny arrived the day after George
died and this picture was
taken of them in
September 2002. Fostering Greyhounds is
our memorial
to our darling Penny who died
when she was nearly 12½ years old.
