Abel - white & fawn greyhound

During 2012 we fostered and re-homed Abel, but due to changes in his family's circumstances it was thought best if he be returned to us and we find him a new forever home.
Abel was living in a home with a whippet since 2012 and he's a lovely dog who was born on the 3rd October 2008. He is neutered, inoculated, house trained and microchipped, is good with children, not keen on cats, walks nicely on the lead, travels well in a car and although we believe there may have been an incident with the whippet towards the end of their stay together we believe he is okay with other breeds of dogs, when he is out walking.

REHOMED: Sunday 16th July

Romeo - Black Greyhound

Romeo
Romeo is a lovely black ex-racing greyhound who walks nicely on the lead and is okay with other dogs. He's a 'smiler', wags his tail in large circles when he's happy and is a very loveable and affectionate lad. When he first arrived he was uncertain of loud or unusual noises. These spooked him and he would try and get away. For people with balance issues this was a problem. Having been with us a while and exposed to all kinds of environments he appears to have overcome his fears. Rather than continuing to walk if he is allowed to stand still and watch he
realises it's just a new noise and it won't hurt him..
Romeo has a lovely nature, is house trained, neutered, inoculated, microchipped and travels well in a car. - Can you help us find him his forever home?

Becky - black greyhound

Becky is a lovely black ex-racing greyhound who has had 2 puppies. She is 6 years old. has a lovely sweet nature, is house trained, spayed, inoculated and microchipped. She's just had one dental but is due another towards the end of July. She has a lovely sweet nature but can be a little shy at times, walks lovely on the lead and travels well in a car.

REHOMED: Monday 3rd July

Legend - Fawn Greyhound

Legend
(now called Leo)

Legend is a handsome fawn ex-racing greyhound who has a black muzzle and who is housetrained, neutered, inoculated and microchipped.
He is a stunning lad who is fine with children and other breeds of dogs, walks nicely on the lead and travels well in a car.

REHOMED: Monday 17th July

Rose - black greyhound

Rose

Rose is a stunning black ex-racing greyhound who was born in April 2013 she weighs about 28kg. We've been told she is a very friendly girl who is full of life, is okay with other greyhounds and while out walking in the park she ignores other breeds of dogs who may be around. She is inoculated, microchipped and shortly to be spayed. She walks okay on the lead and travels well in a car.

REHOMED: Monday 17th July

Snowflake - black greyhound

Snowflake
(now called Skye)

Snowflake is a beautiful ex-racing greyhound who is covered in white flecks, hence her name. She weighs 26kg. and was born August 2013.
Snowflake finished her racing career when she broke a toe, but that is all okay now.
She has a lovely temperament, is microchipped, inoculations up to date and she is shortly to be spayed. She walks okay on the lead and travels well in a car.

REHOMED: Monday 17th July

Romeo Intro
(cat trainable)
Romeo Intro is a black male ex-racing greyhound who was born in September 2012. He weighs about 30 kg. is neutered, inoculated and microchipped.
Romeo Intro is a lovely dog who is cat trainable.

REHOMED: Monday 17th July

Maeve - white & brindle Greyhound

Maeve is a small white and bindle ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 5th July 2012. She weighs about 21 kg. and is okay around other breeds of dogs, has no issues, is good on the lead and travels well in a car.
Maeve was rehomed on the 12th March 2017 and was settling in well, but sadly came back to us on the 7th July 2017 because of her owners decline in health.

Anna

waiting a space to come here, but if you wish to
adopt one he/she can be brought here for you.

George
George is a black ex-racing greyhound who is coming here shortly. He is 5 years old and weighs 38 kg. - Can you help us find him a new home?

Born in September 2014 he is a quiet, placid dog who is very friendly and okay with children. - Can you help us find him a new home?

Teddy
Teddy is a blue ex-racing greyhound who is coming here shortly. He weighs about 34 kg and from what we've been told he can sometimes be a bit enthusiastic going for walks, really wants to be friends, is a bit of a handfull at times and likes to lick you. - Can you help us find him a new home?

King
King is a black ex-racing greyhound who is coming here shortly. He was born on the 10th August 2010 and weighs 32.66 kg.
As a pup King fell on hard times and was sleeping on concrete. When his current owner/trainer heard about him and the condition he was in he immediately acquired King. King was covered in weeping sores and had no hair on his body apart a line down his back.
King is fit and well but the hair on his back end won't come back because the hair folicals are ruined. We've been told he travels well, has a bit of a boisterous nature and pulls a bit on the lead but he's fine with children. - Can you help us find him a new home?

Bess
Bess is coming here as soon as she's finished her season. She is a 2 ½ years old blue greyhound who weighs about 23kg. Although she’s got earmarks she has no racing name because she's only been a pet, not trained for racing.
She’s okay on the lead. Loves to chase a ball and plays with a Jack Russell who she bowls over if he gets too giddy.
Bess is full of fun, full of life and loves running into water especially the sea.
When she arrives here we will need to check the status of her inoculations and microchip along with getting her spayed.

RESERVED

Sonny

He's between 4 and 5 years old, weighs about 35 kg. is okay on the lead, okay with other breeds of dogs, likes to get out and about and loves attention - Can you help us find him a new home?

Sabrina - white & black greyhound

Sabrina

Sabrina is Sonya's litter sister and their previous owner/trainer say they are as different as 'chalk and cheese' so she is very very confiedent and outgoing.
She is a lovely white and black ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 6th January 2012 and who is coming here shortly. - Can you help us find her a new home?

Paddy

Paddy is a black ex-racing greyhound who is coming here shortly. Born in December 2012 he weighs 34kg. From what we've been told he's a very intelligent dog who shows no interest in other dogs, eats well and is in a good condition but is slightly bald on his back end. Paddy is a nice dog who walks okay on the lead and travels well in a car. - Can you help us find him a new home?

Barney

BECKY IS IN A LONG-TERM FOSTER HOME with Beckham another greyhound. Becky is a beautiful fawn brindle ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 2nd May 2004.
Becky lived with an elderly gentleman for a few months, but was sadly returned to 'Rescue' because of the deterioration of her owner's health.

Pearly - black greyhound

Pearly suffers from kidney problems and went to his long-term foster home with Julia and her family on Monday 1st August 2016. Here he will stay and be loved and cared for during his twilight years.

ABOUT US:
We've had greyhounds since April 1997 and between July 2004 and November 2009 we fostered 82 for Dumfriesshire and Cumbria Greyhound Rescue. During December 2009 we established the SOUTH LAKES branchof the Retired Greyhound Trust (RGT). We have now fostered and re-homed in excess of 400 greyhounds.
Being in the South Lakes we are situated at the southern end of the English Lake District in Cumbria at Witherslack, which is half way between Kendal and Grange-over-Sands. As fosterers it is our passion to help greyhounds through the transition stage from kennels to home life, helping them to adapt to the family way of life and being part of our family until they find their forever homes. The voluntary work we do is a memorial to our darling Penny.

WHY ADOPT A GREYHOUND?

Greyhounds make wonderful pets. They are for life, not just for racing. They all deserve a second chance. Greyhounds are elegent, very intelligent, tend to be laid back, lazy if given the chance, need little exercise, often just two, half hour walks a day. Greyhounds thrive on love and affection, adapt quickly to the family way of life and make very gentle and loyal pets.

Many thousands of Greyhounds are bred each year in the UK and Ireland and thousands of puppies and youngsters are put to sleep because they don't make the grade for racing. The average age of a Greyhound coming into 'Rescue' is 3 to 4 years old when they are no longer needed. However, the normal life expectancy of a Greyhound is between 12 and 15 years - the longest living of the larger breeds of dog means they have many years ahead of them once they are no longer needed for racing Only a very small percentage are the lucky ones who are re-homed.

CURRENT
GREYHOUNDS

White and black Greyhound
Lena came into our lives
on the 23rd May 2013. Not
quite 2 years old she didn't
make the grade for racing,
but she raced headlong
into our hearts and home.

Fawn Greyhound

Star came into our lives on the 18th October 2015. When our 4 month old grand daughter cried for her bottle, he came over and rested his head on her shoulder and within a minute she was calm. It sealed his future with us.

Robbie - black Greyhound

Robbie was here a year before being adopted. His new owners lost confidence after he was hurt by 2 off lead terriers. He came back and became the newest member of our family.

ADOPTING A
GREYHOUND

When adopting a greyhound the suggested donation is £150.00 which goes towards neutering, inoculations, upkeep etc. Some people give a little less, while
others want to give more. We are quite flexible with this.
With this we provide:
Martingale Collar, Lead,
Muzzle and 4 weeks free

company PetPlan

to include your email address on our list for our information emails about fundraising events, monthly walks, awareness meetings and events.

s

The aim of the monthly walks are for greyhound owners to meet others in the area and to promote the breed as the amazing pets we all love. When we all walk as a group hopefully people will stop to talk to us and learn about these amazing dogs. Please come along, have fun and help more greyhounds find their forever homes.

to Ingleborough Cave.

£1 entry fee
Car park post code - LA2 8EF.
£2.50 for 2 hours.
It's often possible to park on the road for free in the village.
Walk is mostly on the level through woods, with one steep-ish 100 yard section. Possible to return same way as journey up to cave if this section looks too steep for anybody and we would all get back to same place we set off from. Lovely limestone karst scenery and interesting plants and trees as Dr. Farrer (owner) was a keen plant collector.
Might be fun to go to Ingleton gymkhana (near LA6 3BA) afterwards for delicious home made refreshments. Also there's a fun dog show...Best 6 legs; Waggiest Tail; Dog Who Looks Most Like his/her Human etc. Hope to see lots of hounds and their humans on the day!
