Some of the Greyhounds currently looking for new homes.
|
Tigger
An ideal companion for someone who can't walk far and who has a garden for Tigger to potter in.
|
Tigger is a 9 year old brindle greyhound who is being fostered with Peter, Anne and their three dogs. Tigger has spent most of his life on a farm before coming into a rescue centre. Town life has been quite alien to him, as was living as part of a family with other dogs. Tigger's past has not been an easy one and we now realise the reactions that signified he may have been in pain when he first arrived was the result of a past trauma of some kind.
Tigger is an absolute treasure in the house, but isn't keen on going for walks, so he would make an ideal companion for an elderly person or couple or someone who wants a companion but can't walk far. All Tigger wants is a loving home and a garden to potter in and do his toilet - can you help us find him this home? |

|
| Bluey, has been returned to us through no fault of his own. Bluey is a lovely, friendly blue ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 2nd September 2007. He weighs 29k, is house trained, neutered, inoculated and microchipped. He loves playing ball and will fetch them back to you after you've thrown them for him. He travels well in the car, walks nicely on the lead, gets on fine with children and is super with other breeds of dogs. Julia who is fostering Bluey says he is a gem, not |
|
| the slightest bit of trouble, and she will find it hard to part with him when the time comes. Julia feels Bluey would benefit living with another dog, but in the right home this is not essential. Bluey has Discoid Lupas so needs a sun cream on his nose when out in the sun otherwise his nose will go pink and bleed a little at the side. Julia says doing this is simple and no trouble at all - can you help us find him his real forever home? |
|
Tam
Lived in a home
for 2 years
|
| Tam has lived with an elderly gentleman the past 2 years, but has sadly returned due to the decline of his owner's health. Tam is currently being fostered with Jenny and Stuart and their family of Greyhounds. He is a beautiful black and white ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 6th September 2002. He was the Racing Kennel's mascot and often visited friends houses and the local pub. He is neutered, inoculated and microchipped, walks nicely on the lead, travels well in the car, and is a lovely, adorable companion - can you help us find him his forever home. |
|
|
Shepherd
A real mummy's boy
who
is a little unsure
of parked
cars at the moment.
|
Shepherd is a lovely dark brindle ex-racing Greyhound who was born on the 9th May 2009. Shepherd is currently being fostered with Jenny and Stuart along with their family of Greyhounds and is their 140th Greyhound to foster.
Shepherd is inoculated, neutered, microchipped and house trained. He has a nice nature, and although a little nervous to begin with he has come from his shell. Loves his bones and soft toys, enjoys plenty of cuddles and is a real 'mummy's boy'. He travels well in the car and enjoys being in there, but panics as he approaches them. Moving vehicles don't bother him so we are working with him to show that parked vehicles are no threat to him - can you help us find him a nice forever home. |
|
|
|
|
| Madonna is a small white and black greyhound who is 3 years old. She weighs about 25k, is speyed, inoculated and microchipped. She walks gently on the lead and from what we've been told she is fine with other breeds of dogs and children. |
|
|
|
|
| Billy is a handsome black ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 25th August 2009. He weighs about 33k, is inoculated, microchipped and travels well in the car. Although kennel clean Billy will be house trained while with Wendy and her family who are fostering him until we find him a forever home. He is due to be neutered shortly and more information will be available as we get to know him - can you help us find him a new home? |
|
|
|
|
| Horace is currently being fostered with Pat and her family. He is 7 years old, but thinks he's only 3! Is a white and black ex-racing greyhound who weighs approx 33k. Horace has a nice nature, walks nicely on the lead, travels well in the car, is okay with children and other breeds of dogs - can you help us find him a new forever home? |
|
|
|
|
| Rose is a blue ex-racing Greyhound who is 6 years old, weighs approximately 68lbs, has a quiet manner, travels well in the car and is okay with children and other breeds of dogs. |
|
|
|

MORE GREYHOUNDS ARRIVING SOON.
In addition to the Greyhounds mentioned above we also have a further 6 or so waiting to arrive as soon as foster homes become available for them. We also have a further 20 or so others who are presently in another RGT rescue kennel awaiting their forever home. If we don't have a greyhound in foster care that is suitable for your family we have others in the kennels that will be.
If you would like to re-home a Greyhound please contact us for more information. |
|
|
|
Goldie is our first long-term foster dog
PLEASE contact us to sponser Goldie in her long-term foster home during her twilight years.
Goldie because of her age (born January 2001) and her injured back leg, which makes her walk on her knuckle is now living in a long-term foster home with Julia and Peter and their Greyhound Rosie. Here she will stay being loved and spoilt during her twilight years. |
|
|
FOSTERERS NEEDED
Fosterers are an invaluable part of
greyhound rescue in that another
greyhound is living life away from
the kennels and and taking the first
steps to getting used to the family
way of life. If you live in the South
Lakes or the South Lakes Furness
Peninsula area of Cumbria or the
surrounding area and would like to
foster a greyhound until it finds
a new home please telephone Jenny
or Stuart on 015395 52394
or email us for more information.

TINS & CARTONS OF DOG MEAT WANTED
If anyone living local to the South Lakes would like to donate tins or cartons
of dog meat for the greyhounds in our keeping until they find good
homes we would be most grateful. Although we feed them a
'complete' greyhound food, tinned and cartons of dog meat
gives
variety to their diet.
May we thank all of you who have made a donation -
it is much
appreciated and the greyhounds love it!
Please telephone Jenny or Stuart on 015395 52394 or email us
Please telephone Pauline on 01229 827073 if you live in
the Barrow-in-Furness area
|
|
WOOL TO KNIT 'SNUGGLE COATS' WANTED
We have a number of ladies knitting snuggle coats for us and we are looking
for wool to help them make these. The money raised from selling the coats
is used to look after and
help find homes for the greyhounds
we foster while they are looking
for their forever homes. The
snuggle coats are hand knitted and ideal
for those cooler days
in Spring and Autumn and for those greyhounds
who like to be wrapped up warm at night.
Please telephone Jenny or Stuart on 015395 52394 or email us.
Please telephone Pauline on 01229 827073 if you live in
the Barrow-in-Furness area

|

a registered charity
(no. 296668) to care for and to assist in finding

ABOUT US: We've had greyhounds since April 1997 and between July 2004 and November 2009 we fostered 82 greyhounds for Dumfriesshire and Cumbria Greyhound Rescue. At the beginning of December 2009 we began fostering for the Retired Greyhound Trust (RGT) and established their SOUTH LAKES branch.
Being in the South Lakes we are situated at the southern end of the English Lake District in Cumbria at Witherslack, which is half way between Kendal and Grange-over-Sands. As fosterers it is our passion to help greyhounds through the transition stage from kennels to home life, helping them to adapt to the family way of life and being part of our family until they find their forever homes. |

Greyhounds make wonderful pets. They are for life, not just for racing. They all deserve a second chance. Greyhounds are elegent, very intelligent, tend to be laid back, lazy if given the chance, need little exercise, often just two, half hour walks a day. Greyhounds thrive on love and affection, adapt quickly to the family way of life and make very gentle and loyal pets.
Over 40,000 Greyhounds are bred each year in the UK and Ireland and thousands of Greyhound puppies and youngsters are put to sleep because they don't make the grade for racing. The average age of a Greyhound coming into 'Rescue' is 3 to 4 years old when they are no longer needed. However, the normal life expectancy of a Greyhound is between 12 and 15 years - the longest living of the larger breeds of dog means they have many years ahead of them once they are no longer needed for racing Only a very small percentage are the lucky ones who are re-homed.

|
George introduced us to the world
of hounds.
He arrived in April 1997 and
was about 9 years
old when he was
rescued.
He had been badly
treated
and sadly we only had him 3½ months
when he died.
He was our first true love and
he
was our ' Gentleman George'.

Bobby (light brindle - front right) with his brothers and sisters |

When Penny died Bobby chose Indi as his
new companion and here she is in March 2005
|
|
Bobby and Penny arrived the day after George
died and this picture was
taken of them in
September 2002. Fostering Greyhounds is
our memorial
to our darling Penny who died
when she was nearly 12½ years old.
