Black Greyhound

Bullet is a handsome black ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 6th June 2009. He weighs 31.4k, is house trained, neutered, inoculated, microchipped and recently had a dental when 3 canine teeth were removed. Bullet is a super dog who is very friendly and adores affection, he just can't get enough of it and always wants to please. He is one of those dogs who looks you in the eye when he wants something, and loves a kiss. He travels well in the car and ignores other breeds of dogs when out walking.
REHOMED: 28th June 2015

White and black greyhound

Jack is a stunning white and black ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 1st September 2011. He's quite a tall dog and weighs about 32k - he's very handsome.
Jack is house trained, neutered, inoculated and microchipped. A quiet, happy dog with a nice, gentle nature who walks perfectly on his lead, is okay with children, loves playing with his toys and travels well in the car.
Around certain other dogs he becomes nervous, anxious and a little jumpy especially if they invade is personal space. This behaviour we feel is because he doesn't know what other dogs are and becomes frightened in case they may hurt him. His previous owner and trainer mentioned he
wasn't socialised with other breeds of dogs prior to coming here and because of his nature this is why he behaves the way he does. We've seen this before in foster dogs (along with other breeds of dogs) and we believe, given time and 'help' Jack will learn to overcome his fears
Jack was re-homed in March 2015, but came back after 3 weeks because there were too many chickens, sheep and lambs near his new home who caused both Jack and his new owner anxiety. We are now looking for his perfect forever home.
One of the main reasons Jack has been a foster dog for so long is because the family who fostered him for a month while we were on holiday and for a while after we got back really wanted to adopt him. This is because one of their greyhounds had been diagnosed terminally ill. Thankfully, at the time of writing this she is still with them, but not all the family feel their home and lifestyle is the correct one for Jack, hence him being here with us and still looking for his forever home. - Can you help us find him that home?

Dark Brindle Greyhound

Tommy is a lovely dark brindle ex-racing greyhound who was born in May 2010. He weighs 34k, is inoculated and microchipped. Tommy has a nice nature, loves people and travels well in a car. His current owner/trainer tells us he is good on the lead, only time he pulls is when he wants to get home for tea. Tommy is perfect when left on his own, is great with kids and everyone - he just loves being loved. He is alright with other dogs, just has a bark but when he gets up close to other breed of dogs he's fine with them. He hasn't got a bad bone in his body. He has a bent tail he's had it since he was a pup. - Can you help us find him a new home?

Black Greyhound

Ebony is a black ex-racing greyhound who has a beautiful nature. She was born on the 1st June 2011 and weighs 28.8k. She is spayed, inoculated, microchipped and recently had a dental which involved no teeth extractions as was anticipated, but just a scale and polish.
Ebony is fine with children, walking on the lead and travels well in a car. - Can you help us find her a new home?

White Greyhound

Bob

Bob is a white ex-racing greyhound with a half brindle face who was born on the 9th June 2011.
He weighs 31.5k, is neutered, inoculated and microchipped.
Bob is Lena, Chrissie and Billy's litter brother who we've re-homed earlier.
Bob has a nice friendly nature, is okay with children and other breeds of dogs, including small ones, walks nicely on the lead and travels well in a car.
RESERVED

Black Greyhound

Jodi is a black ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 1st November 2012 and weighs 25.4k. She is spayed, microchipped and inoculated, and currently being house trained.
Jodi has a lovely sweet nature, is okay on the lead, has seen other breeds of dogs while out walking and travels well in the car.

REHOMED: 28th June 2015

Black Greyhound

Ace
Ace was re-homed on the 7th December 2014 and was sadly returned to us on the 2nd June 2015. His owners felt he was not 100% happy with them and found living in a home with 2 young boys too busy for him.
Ace is a stunning black ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 24th August 2011. He weighs 35k and had a toe removed during his racing career. He is house trained, neutered, inoculated and microchipped.
Ace is a friendly lad with a nice temperament who walks lovely on the lead, suffers no separation anxiety, is fine with other breeds of dogs and travels well in the car.
His previous owner said he was doing so well mixing with all types of dogs, returning when whistled or called, and walking next to
him off lead in the woods. There were tears when he was brought back here and his owners dearly wished he'd been happier with them. - Can you help us find him his forever home?

Frankie is a handsome black ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 5th November 2011. He is inoculated, microchipped and has a beautiful, friendly nature. Frankie's racing career came to a dramatic end when he fractured his back foot, and despite subsequent treatment it has healed leaving his leg looking not as it should do, although his toes are still facing forward. It was thought at first that Frankie would require orthopedic surgery to sort everything out, but upon further examination this was found not to be the case because everything is stable and healing. - Can you help us find him a new home?

ABOUT US:
We've had greyhounds since April 1997 and between July 2004 and November 2009 we fostered 82 greyhounds for Dumfriesshire and Cumbria Greyhound Rescue. At the beginning of December 2009 we began fostering for the Retired Greyhound Trust (RGT) and established their SOUTH LAKES branch. We have now fostered in excess of 300.
Being in the South Lakes we are situated at the southern end of the English Lake District in Cumbria at Witherslack, which is half way between Kendal and Grange-over-Sands. As fosterers it is our passion to help greyhounds through the transition stage from kennels to home life, helping them to adapt to the family way of life and being part of our family until they find their forever homes .

WHY ADOPT A GREYHOUND?

Greyhounds make wonderful pets. They are for life, not just for racing. They all deserve a second chance. Greyhounds are elegent, very intelligent, tend to be laid back,
lazy if given the chance, need little exercise, often just two, half hour walks a day. Greyhounds thrive on love and affection, adapt quickly to the family way of life and make very gentle and loyal pets.

Over 40,000 Greyhounds are bred each year in the UK and Ireland and thousands of Greyhound puppies and youngsters are put to sleep because they don't make the grade for racing. The average age of a Greyhound coming into 'Rescue' is 3 to 4 years old when they are no longer needed. However, the normal life expectancy of a Greyhound is between 12 and 15 years - the longest living of the larger breeds of dog means they have many years ahead of them once they are no longer needed for racing Only a very small percentage are the lucky ones who are re-homed.

ARE YOU ABLE TO FOSTER A
GREYHOUND
FOR US?

Fosterers are an invaluable part of greyhound rescue in that another greyhound is living life away from the kennels and taking the first steps to getting used to the family way of life. If you live in the South Lakes or the surrounding area and would like to foster a greyhound until it finds a new home.
please telephone:
Jenny or Stuart on 015395 52394 or email us for more information.

TINS & CARTONS OF DOG FOOD WANTED

,
dog biscuits, Dentastix
and rawhide chews)

If anyone would like to donate tins or cartons of dog meat or tinned pilchards and sardines for the greyhounds in our keeping until they find good homes we would be most grateful. Although we feed them a 'complete' greyhound food, tinned and cartons of dog meat gives variety to their diet along with gravy bones, dog biscuits, Dentastix and rawhide chews. OUR
HOUNDS

George in 1997
George introduced us to the world of hounds. Arriving in April 1997 he had been badly treated and was about 9 years old. Sadly we only had him 3½ months when he died.
He was our first true love.
He was our
'Gentleman George'.

Bobby and Penny
Bobby and Penny arrived the
day after George died.
FOSTERING GREYHOUNDS
IS OUR MEMORIAL TO OUR
DARLING
PENNY
who died
in February 2004 aged
nearly 12½ years old.
Sady Bobby passed away on the 26th April 2009 aged 13 years and 10 months.

Indi in March 2005
When Penny died Bobby
chose Indi as his new
companion and here she
is in March 2005

Fawn Greyhound
Sandy who we nicknamed
'the beast' arrrived here on
the 4th November 2007. In August 2008 we adopted him and he's a love!

Solo - brindle greyhoun
Solo melted our heart the moment he walked through the door - he is the one who helped heal the wounds following Bobby's death.
Sadly Solo passed away on
the 12th February 2014 aged
7 years 9 months old.

White and black Greyhound
Lena came into our lives
on the 23rd May 2013. Not
quite 2 years old she didn't
make the grade for racing,
but she raced headlong
into our hearts and home.
