Black Greyhound

Stan

Stan is a handsome black ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 23rd November 2009. He has a lovely nature, weighs about 30.5k, is house trained, neutered, inoculated, microchipped and travels well in the car.

(RESERVED)

Black & white Greyhound

Linda
(cat trainable)
Linda iis a 9 year old black and white greyhound whose had 4 litters totalling 22 pups.
She has a lovely sweet nature, and is a very happy, loving girl, always wagging her tail. She is okay with other breeds of dogs, walks nicely on the lead and travels well in the car.
Linda is house trained, speyed and inoculated, but she only has the one canine tooth. This however, doesn't affect her happiness nor her appetite!

(RESERVED)

Black Greyhound

Iris
(cat trainable)
Iris is a beautiful small black greyhound who, her trainer & owner said simply didn't want to race or chase. She was born on the 2nd October 2011 and is spayed, inoculated and microchipped.
Iris is a lovely friendly girl, who was a little unsure of the big outside world when she arrived, but this is getting better as she settles. Iris is cat trainable and travels well in the car.

(RESERVED)

White & black Greyhound

Poppy
(cat trainable)
Poppy is a very pretty small white and black greyhound who simply didn't want to race or chase. She was born on the 1st January 2013 and is spayed, inoculated and microchipped. She is a very affectionate, playful and loveable girl who can be a little timid at times. At first we thought she was nervous in new surroundings and frightened of the big outside world, but we now believe her behaviour is because she is not used to being walked with a collar and lead - she reacts the same in the house and outside once she is asked to walk forward by the pull on her collar, she just anchors her feet to the ground!
Poppy is cat trainable, okay with other breeds of dogs and travels well in the car - Can you help us find her a new home?

Black Greyhound

Debbie is a small black ex-racing Greyhound who weighs 27.2k. Born in February 2011 she is spayed, inoculated, microchipped. She has a nice friendly and loving nature. Always happy and wagging her tail, she walks okay on the lead and travels well in a car.

RE-HOMED: 22nd March 2015

Black Greyhound

Delilah is a black female who was born on the 4th April 2012. She weighs about 27k, has a nice temperament and is okay on the lead. Delilah's racing career came to an abrupt end with her first race with her new owner at the end of January when she fractured her right hock. She was in splint and bandages until the end of February. When the vet gave her the okay she came here. However she must rest for the next few weeks with no running so she is currently in the kennel and using the space surrounding the kennel to walk around alog with being in the house to give her a change of surroundings. After that, we have been told she should be fine.
Delilah is now spayed, inoculated and microchipped. - Can you help us find her a new home?

Black Greyhound

Ice

Ice is a lovely black male ex-racing greyhound who was born in November 2010. He is neutered, inoculated and travels well in the car.- Can you help us find him a new home?

Black Greyhound

Deli
(cat trainable)

Deli is a pretty black 18 month old female greyhound who simply refused to race or chase anything. She is a happy girl with a lovely nature.
She is house trained, spayed, inoculated and microchipped. She is also cat trainable, walks nicely on the lead and travels well in a car.

RE-HOMED: 21st March 2015

Black Greyhound

Bullet is a handsome black ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 6th June 2009. He weighs 31.4k, is neutered, inoculated and microchipped. He is a friendly lad and travels well in the car. We have also been told he ignores other breeds of dogs when out walking, which we will of course monitor - Can you help us find him a new home?

Badger is a lovely white and black greyhound who has been living in a home with an elderly couple for the past 3 years. Sadly due to his owner's decline in health he is now with us looking for his forever home. With him being in a home for so long he came here rather than going back into kennels.
Badger was born on the 22nd December 2009, is neutered, house trained, inoculated and microchipped. He weighs 26.2k, has a lovely friendly nature, walks nicely on the lead and is okay with children and other breeds of dogs.

(RESERVED)

White and black greyhound

Jack was re-homed at the beginning of March, but is coming back to us at the weekend because there are too many chickens, sheep and lambs near his new home who are causing him anxiety.
Jack is a stunning white and black ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 1st September 2011. He's quite a tall dog and weighs about 32k.
Jack is house trained, neutered, inoculated and microchipped. A quiet dog with a nice, friendly nature who doesn't pull on his lead when out walking, is okay with children, loves playing with his toys and travels well in the car. However, he''s not been socialised with other breeds of dogs while in the racing kennels and is still coming to terms with them especially if they invade is personal space. - Can you help us find him his forever home?

Greyhounds available for adoption
but still with their owners or trainers
waiting a space to come here

Jack

Jack is a black ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 20th August 2008. He weighs about 36k, is good natured and okay with children.
Jack is clean in his kennel, walks okay on the lead and travels well in the car. - Can you help us find him a new home?

Bobby
Bobby is a black ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 11th February 2010 and weighs about 36k.
Bobby walks well on the lead sees other breeds of dogs while out walking and travels well in the car - Can you help us find him a new home?

White Greyhound

Bob

Bob is a white ex-racing greyhound with a half brindle face who was born on the 9th June 2011. He is Lena, Chrissie and Billy's litter brother who we've re-homed earlier.
Bob we are told has a nice nature - Can you help us find him a new home?

Black Greyhound

Guy
Guy is a handsome black ex-racing greyhound who is coming shortly. He was born on the 1st September 2012 and raced until he was 2 years old, then he broke his hock. This has been pinned and he's now fine to be re-homed, but he didn't quite regain the speed he was at prior to being injured hence him waiting to come here.
Guy is a quiet, friendly dog who will make someone a lovely companion. - Can you help us find him his forever home?

Black Greyhound

Robino

Robino is a black ex-racing greyhound who is coming shortly. He was born in November 2010 and travels well in a car - Can you help us find him a new home?

Ebony
Ebony is a black ex-racing greyhound who is coming shortly. She was born on the 1st June 2011 and weighs about 29.5k. - Can you help us find her a new home?

Black Greyhound

Ozil

Ozil is a lovely black ex-racing greyhound who is coming here shortly. Born in November 2012 we have been told he is a real gentleman and will make someone a lovely companion. Ozil is currently being neutered, checking his inoculations are up to date and having a dental if he needs one. Once these are in hand he will be coming here - Can you help us find him a new home?

Dark Brindle Greyhound

Tommy

Tommy is a lovely dark brindle ex-racing greyhound who is coming shortly. He was born in May 2010, has a nice nature, loves people and travels well in a car. We've been told his only problem is he can be a little greedy! His current owner/trainer tells us he is good on the lead, only time he pulls is when he wants to get home for tea. He is perfect when left on his own, is great with kids and everyone - he just loves being loved. He is alright with other dogs, just has a bark but when he gets up close to other breed of dogs he's fine with them. He hasn't got a bad bone in his body. He has a bent tail he's had it since was a pup. - Can you help us find him a new home?

Another greyhound is coming shortly - Can you help us find him or her a new home?

If you see a Greyhound listed above as waiting to come in here no longer listed, it is because the dog has either been re-homed direct by it's owner or trainer or, it has gone into another rescue centre.

IN MEMORIUM

Sadly during 2014 we saw the passing away of a few more of our beloved ex-foster greyhounds along with our very own Solo - our handsome 'big boy'
In addition to Solo there was Barry, Alfie, Swift, Jet, Katie, Goldie, Faith (Jazz), Ned, Star (Jessie), Thunder, Barratt, Schmeichel (Remy), Romeo, Blue (1), Raven, Kenny (Benny) and Jinky.

Tam is a long-term foster dog

Black and white Greyhound

Tam because of his age (born 6th September 2002) is now living in a long-term foster home with Donna and Ric and their labrador called Milo and greyhound called Josh. Here he will stay being loved and spoilt during his twilight years.

Brindle Greyhound

Becky is a beautiful fawn brindle ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 2nd May 2004. Although 10 years old she is fit and well and doesn't look her age.
Becky is house trained, spayed, inoculated and has recently had a dental She lived with an elderly gentleman for a few months, but was sadly returned to 'Rescue' because of the deterioration of her owner's health.
Becky walks nicely on the lead, is calm, and suffers no anxiety issues when left on her own. She is okay with children and other breeds of dogs.
Becky went to her long-term foster home on Tuesday 18th November 2014 where she will be loved, cared for and be enjoyed during her twilight years.

ABOUT US:
We've had greyhounds since April 1997 and between July 2004 and November 2009 we fostered 82 greyhounds for Dumfriesshire and Cumbria Greyhound Rescue. At the beginning of December 2009 we began fostering for the Retired Greyhound Trust (RGT) and established their SOUTH LAKES branch. We have now fostered in excess of 300.
Being in the South Lakes we are situated at the southern end of the English Lake District in Cumbria at Witherslack, which is half way between Kendal and Grange-over-Sands. As fosterers it is our passion to help greyhounds through the transition stage from kennels to home life, helping them to adapt to the family way of life and being part of our family until they find their forever homes .

WHY ADOPT A GREYHOUND?

Greyhounds make wonderful pets. They are for life, not just for racing. They all deserve a second chance. Greyhounds are elegent, very intelligent, tend to be laid back,
lazy if given the chance, need little exercise, often just two, half hour walks a day. Greyhounds thrive on love and affection, adapt quickly to the family way of life and make very gentle and loyal pets.

Over 40,000 Greyhounds are bred each year in the UK and Ireland and thousands of Greyhound puppies and youngsters are put to sleep because they don't make the grade for racing. The average age of a Greyhound coming into 'Rescue' is 3 to 4 years old when they are no longer needed. However, the normal life expectancy of a Greyhound is between 12 and 15 years - the longest living of the larger breeds of dog means they have many years ahead of them once they are no longer needed for racing Only a very small percentage are the lucky ones who are re-homed.

OUR
HOUNDS

George in 1997
George introduced us to the world of hounds. Arriving in April 1997 he had been badly treated and was about 9 years old. Sadly we only had him 3½ months when he died.
He was our first true love.
He was our
'Gentleman George'.

Bobby and Penny
Bobby and Penny arrived the
day after George died.
FOSTERING GREYHOUNDS
IS OUR MEMORIAL TO OUR
DARLING
PENNY
who died
in February 2004 aged
nearly 12½ years old.
Sady Bobby passed away on the 26th April 2009 aged 13 years and 10 months.

Indi in March 2005
When Penny died Bobby
chose Indi as his new
companion and here she
is in March 2005

Fawn Greyhound
Sandy who we nicknamed
'the beast' arrrived here on
the 4th November 2007. In August 2008 we adopted him and he's a love!

Solo - brindle greyhoun
Solo melted our heart the moment he walked through
the door - he is the one who
helped heal the wounds following Bobby's death.
Sadly Solo passed away on
the 12th February 2014 aged
7 years 9 months old.

White and black Greyhound
Lena came into our lives
on the 23rd May 2013. Not
quite 2 years old she didn't
make the grade for racing,
but she raced headlong
into our hearts and home.

ARE YOU ABLE TO FOSTER A
GREYHOUND
FOR US?

Fosterers are an invaluable part of greyhound rescue in that another greyhound is living life away from the kennels and taking the first steps to getting used to the family way of life. If you live in the South Lakes or the surrounding area and would like to foster a greyhound until it finds a new home.
please telephone:
Jenny or Stuart on 015395 52394 or email us for more information.

TINS & CARTONS OF DOG FOOD WANTED
(also pilchards in tomato sauce, sardines and tuna in oil
,
dog biscuits, Dentastix
and rawhide chews)

If anyone would like to donate tins or cartons of dog meat or tinned pilchards and sardines for the greyhounds in our keeping until they find good homes we would be most grateful. Although we feed them a 'complete' greyhound food, tinned and cartons of dog meat gives variety to their diet along with gravy bones, dog biscuits, Dentastix and rawhide chews. May we thank all of you who have made a donation - it is much appreciated and the greyhounds love it!

Please telephone Jenny or Stuart on 015395 52394
