Some of the Greyhounds currently looking for new homes.

Black and white greyhound

Julia is fostering Harvey, who is a charming 2 year old black and white ex-racing greyhound who has a lovely, friendly, playful nature. At first he was nervous, yet bouncy and very inquisitive with the new world around him. but having now settled he is a joy to have. Harvey is being fostered in a family with young children, a Labrador and lurcher and from what we’ve seen so far is okay with other breeds of dogs. He walks nicely on the lead, travels well in the car, is house trained, neutered, inoculated and microchipped - can you help us find him a new home?

Blue greyhound

Our 94th fostered Greyhound is Blue who is a lovely 9 year old ex-racing greyhound who blue in colour. He is house trained, neutered, inoculated and microchipped. Blue can be a little nervous in new situations, but this is reducing the longer he is with us. He travels well in the car, walks nicely on the lead and from what we see so far he is okay with other breeds of dogs - can you help us find him a new home?

Blue greyhound

Our 95th fostered Greyhound is a small blue bitch called Judy. Judy was born on the 8th November 2005 and is a very loving little girl who has a quiet, shy nature until she gets to know you. She walks nicely on the lead. Travelling well in the car she is housetrained, spayed, inoculated and microchipped - can you help us find her a new home?

Red Greyhound

Freddie is a super gentleman who was born on the 5th June 1999 so is 11 years old. Freddie lived with an elderly lady and her cat for 6 years until she became too ill to look after him. He then went to live with another elderly lady who sadly fell a couple of months after adopting him and because of her carer arrangements Freddie has come back to us. He is a super guy, fit and well, full of character and is house trained, neutered, inoculated and microchipped. He weighs 30.8k, walks nicely on the lead, travels well in the car and is fine with children and other breeds of

dogs. Because of what has happened to him over the past few months we are looking for a very special home for a very special gentleman. A home where he will be loved and cherished always - can you help us find him his 'forever' home?

Our 97th Greyhound who we shall be fostering is arriving shortly - can you help us find him or her a new home?

FOSTERERS NEEDED

Fosterers are an invaluable part of greyhound rescue in that another
greyhound is living life away from the kennels and and taking the first steps
to getting used to the family way of life. If you live in the South Lakes area
of Cumbria or the surrounding area and would like to foster a greyhound
until it finds a new home please telephone Jenny or Stuart on 015395 52394
or email us for more information.

ABOUT US: We've had greyhounds since April 1997 and between July 2004 and November 2009 we fostered 82 greyhounds for Dumfriesshire and Cumbria Greyhound Rescue. At the beginning of December 2009 we began fostering for the Retired Greyhound Trust (RGT) and established their SOUTH LAKES branch.
Being in the South Lakes we are situated at the southern end of the English Lake District in Cumbria at Witherslack, which is half way between Kendal and Grange-over-Sands. As fosterers it is our passion to help greyhounds through the transition stage from kennels to home life, helping them to adapt to the family way of life and being part of our family until they find their forever homes.

George arrived in April 1997 and was about 9 years old when he was rescued.
He had been badly treated and sadly we only had him 3½ months when he died.
He was our first true love and the one who introduced us to the world of hounds.
He was our 'Gentleman George' and we were devistated when he died.

Bobby with Penny in September 2002
Bobby and Penny arrived the day after George died and this picture was
taken of them in September 2002. Fostering Greyhounds is our memorial
to our darling Penny who died when she was nearly 12½ years old.

Greyhounds make wonderful pets. They are for life, not just for racing. They all deserve a second chance. Greyhounds are elegent, very intelligent, tend to be laid back, lazy if given the chance, need little exercise, often just two, half hour walks a day. Greyhounds thrive on love and affection, adapt quickly to the family way of life and make very gentle and loyal pets.

Over 40,000 Greyhounds are bred each year in the UK and Ireland and thousands of Greyhound puppies and youngsters are put to sleep because they don't make the grade for racing. The average age of a Greyhound coming into 'Rescue' is 3 to 4 years old when they are no longer needed. However, the normal life expectancy of a Greyhound is between 12 and 15 years - the longest living of the larger breeds of dog means they have many years ahead of them once they are no longer needed for racing Only a very small percentage are the lucky ones who are re-homed.
