Ned - Black Greyhound

Ned

Ned is a lovely black ex-racing Greyhound who was born on the 10th August 2010.
Ned is a very friendly, affectionate lad who loves nothing better that sleeping on our bed and cuddling up! He has a little tuft of hair on the top of his head and Is house trained, neutered, inoculated and microchipped.
Ned walks nicely on the lead and loves travelling in a car, but can be wary of other dogs while out walking due to being attacked by two off lead labradoodles before arriving here. When he sees another dog he just cries and wants to get away from them. - Can you help us find him a new home?

Robbo - Black Greyhound

Robbie is a black ex-racing greyhound who was born in November 2010.
He is house trained, neutered, inoculated, microchipped and had a dental when 2 teeth were removed shortly after he arrived here.
Robbie adores being cuddled, is perfect in the house but can be a little insecure at times and wants to be near you and gives you a very sad look if he is unsure of what is happening. Robbie doesn't like parrots nor cats.
When out walking his insecurity and anxiety with the big outside world shows itself if other
dogs get inside his comfort zone, but he has shown that once he gets to know a dog he is okay with it. He tends to ignores other dogs if they leave him alone and he walks nicely on the lead, but is very interested in his surroundings and wants to chase any cat he sees.
Robbie travels well in a car and is a lovely dog so with the right owner in the right environment he will make someone a super and loyal companion. - Can you help us find him a new home?

Freddie - white & black Greyhound

Freddie is a stunning white and black ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 1st August 2010. He weighs 30.55k, is house trained, neutered, inoculated, microchipped and has an extremely loving and affectionate nature - he absolutely adores cuddles.
Freddie is super with children even young babies and ignores their crying, other breeds of dogs he tends to ignore when on his walks, walks nicely on the lead and travels well in the car.
Freddie went to a new home in October for nearly 3 weeks, but was sadly returned because it was discovered the family parrot, who was rather vocal caused him undue stress and it was felt in Freddie's best interest he be returned and we find him another home - Can you help us find him that new home?

Esther - brindle greyhound

Esther is a beautiful dark brindle ex-racing greyhound who is house trained, spayed, inoculated and microchipped. Her annual inoculation is due on the 16th December 2016
Esther is a very affectionate girl now that her arrival nerves have settled. She walks lovely on the lead, is okay with other breeds of dogs and children. She loves playing with her soft toys and balls and travels well in a car. However, we've noticed when she moves to a new home those arrival nerves re-appear for a few days so anyone wishing to adopt Esther will need to take this into account and be patient with her - she is well worth the wait. - Can you help us find her a new home?

Sangria - brindle greyhound

Sangria is a lovely small brindle ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 12th August 2013 and weighs 24k.
Sangria is spayed, house trained, microchipped and inoculated. She is rather a timid girl until she gets to know you then she becomes your best friend and is lovely and playful. Her previous owner/trainer says she is used to seeing small dogs around and travels well in the car. - Can you help us find her a new home?

Kit - Black Greyhound

Kit

Kit is a black ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 6th January 2012, he weighs 34.5k. is neutered, house trained, microchipped and inoculated up to May 2016.
Kit has no injuries and retired because he just got fed up of racing, just didn’t want to do it anymore. He’s very laid back, placid, not excitable and a ‘couch potato’, he walks nicely on the lead and doesn’t pull, travels well in a car, is okay with children and other breeds of dogs. - Can you help us find him a new home?

Hanna - black and white greyhound

Hanna is a small white and black greyhound who has sadly been returned due to a change in the family circumstances of her previous owner. - Can you help us find her that forever home?

IN MEMORIUM

Sadly during 2015 we saw the passing away of our beautiful little Indi who over the years helped us foster nearly 350 greyhounds. Sadly Reggie, Red and Flash also passed away.

Dogs in long-term foster homes

Black and white Greyhound

Tam because of his age (born 6th September 2002) is now living in a long-term foster home with Donna and Ric and their labrador called Milo and greyhound called Josh. Here he will stay being loved and spoilt during his twilight years.

Brindle Greyhound

Becky because of her age is now living in a long-term foster home with Beckham another greyhound. Becky is a beautiful fawn brindle ex-racing greyhound who was born on the 2nd May 2004.
Becky is house trained, spayed, inoculated and has recently had a dental She lived with an elderly gentleman for a few months, but was sadly returned to 'Rescue' because of the deterioration of her owner's health.
Becky walks nicely on the lead, is calm, and suffers no anxiety issues when left on her own. She is okay with children and other breeds of dogs.
Becky went to her long-term foster home on Tuesday 18th November 2014 where she will be loved, cared for and be enjoyed during her twilight years.

ABOUT US:
We've had greyhounds since April 1997 and between July 2004 and November 2009 we fostered 82 greyhounds for Dumfriesshire and Cumbria Greyhound Rescue. At the beginning of December 2009 we began fostering for the Retired Greyhound Trust (RGT) and established their SOUTH LAKES branch. We have now fostered in excess of 350.
Being in the South Lakes we are situated at the southern end of the English Lake District in Cumbria at Witherslack, which is half way between Kendal and Grange-over-Sands. As fosterers it is our passion to help greyhounds through the transition stage from kennels to home life, helping them to adapt to the family way of life and being part of our family until they find their forever homes .

WHY ADOPT A GREYHOUND?

Greyhounds make wonderful pets. They are for life, not just for racing. They all deserve a second chance. Greyhounds are elegent, very intelligent, tend to be laid back,
lazy if given the chance, need little exercise, often just two, half hour walks a day. Greyhounds thrive on love and affection, adapt quickly to the family way of life and make very gentle and loyal pets.

Over 40,000 Greyhounds are bred each year in the UK and Ireland and thousands of Greyhound puppies and youngsters are put to sleep because they don't make the grade for racing. The average age of a Greyhound coming into 'Rescue' is 3 to 4 years old when they are no longer needed. However, the normal life expectancy of a Greyhound is between 12 and 15 years - the longest living of the larger breeds of dog means they have many years ahead of them once they are no longer needed for racing Only a very small percentage are the lucky ones who are re-homed.

GREYHOUNDS

Fawn Greyhound
Sandy who we nicknamed
'the beast' arrrived here on the
4th November 2007. In August
2008 we adopted him.

White and black Greyhound
Lena came into our lives
on the 23rd May 2013. Not
quite 2 years old she didn't
make the grade for racing,
but she raced headlong
into our hearts and home.

Fawn Greyhound

Star - his previous owner's
prize dog came into our lives
on the 18th October 2015
after he'd finished racing.
At the end of November our
4 month old grand daughter
was crying for her bottle, he
walked over, rested his head
on her shoulder and shut his eyes. He stayed there allowing her to touch him and she went quiet. It took less than a minute. When she was calm he went back to his bed and she waited quietly for her bottle. It was amazing to watch and sealed
his future with us.

Jenny and Stuart's hounds - gone but not forgotten

George in 1997
George introduced us to the world
of hounds. Arriving in April 1997
he had been badly treated and
was about 9 years old. Sadly we
only had him 3½ months when
he died. He was our first true love.
He was our
'Gentleman George'.

Solo - brindle greyhoun
Solo melted our heart the moment
he walked through the door - he is
the one who helped heal the
wounds following Bobby's death.
Sadly Solo passed away on the
12th February 2014 aged 7 years
9 months old.

Bobby and Penny
Bobby and Penny arrived the
day after George died.
FOSTERING GREYHOUNDS
IS OUR MEMORIAL TO OUR
DARLING
PENNY
who died in
February 2004 aged nearly
12½ years old. Bobby passed
away on 26th April 2009
aged 13 years 10 months.
Indi in March 2005
When Penny died Bobby
chose Indi as his new
companion and here she
is in March 2005. She helped
us foster nearly 340 dogs.
Indi passed away on the 20th July
2015 aged 14 years 3 months.
