WARNING
COCOA BEAN MULCH
&
COCOA SHELL MULCH
|
|
Cocoa bean mulch is a byproduct of the chocolate-making industry and is highly prized by gardeners for its dark, rich colour and high nutrient content, not to mention the delicious aroma.
Cocoa Mulch, which is sold in various stores and garden centres contains an ingredient called 'Theobromine', which is lethal to dogs and cats.
Lethal to dogs and cats, it smells like chocolate and is very attractive to dogs. The animals can't resist the smell and will happily eat it. Once ingested death is fast and nasty.
A 50-pound dog eating 2 ounces of mulch will likely experience gastrointestinal upset. If the dog eats 4.5 ounces, its heart rate will increase. Ingesting more than 5 ounces can lead to seizures, and eating over 9 ounces can cause death.
Signs of theobromine poisoning will occur 4 to 6 hours after ingestion.
|
With regards the brand in the photo above during 2010 the packaging had NO warnings printed on the label. Upon further investigation on the company's web site, it was discovered this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats, but not labelled as such, and a number of deaths occurred as a result.
