Dogs welcome, large or small, one or more. A Greyhound haven!

The voluntary work Jenny and Stuart started in July 2004 is a memorial to their darling Penny. Without her coming into their lives none of this would have happened.

Please ring for an appointment to come and see the greyhounds and have a chat. You are most welcome, but as we run a bed and breakfast it is essential you ring and arrange a date and time to visit.

Fosterers are a valuable part of greyhound rescue in that another greyhound is living life away from the kennels and taking the first steps towards getting used to the family way of life. If you live in the South Lakes or the surrounding area and would like to foster a greyhound until we can find him or her a new home.

Went to his new home on Saturday 25th October 2014

Nero's arrival and a brief history

Black Greyhound
Nero is a big handsome black greyhound who is very affectionate and friendly, loves coming to say hello and going for a walk. He also travels well in a car.
Nero was born in February 2012, weighs 35.3k, is house trained, neutered, inoculated and microchipped.
Nero only trialed once before breaking his leg. This has been repaired, he's had physio and he's fine to be re-homed, but he is unable to sustain the pressures of a racing track again, so he is looking for his forever home.

Went to his new home on Saturday 25th October 2014.

Nero's Diary
* The branch kennel at the bottom of our garden is where Nero and the other resident(s) will be for the first day or so until he gets to know the other greyhounds. He has use of our garden and paddock, and once he gets to know the other dogs he will be allowed in the house during the day and all the dogs will then take it in turn to sleep in the house at night, so they become use to sleeping in both the kennel and the house.

15th April 2014
This lunch time Nero arrived, although that wasn't his name before he came here, it was Bobby. However, we were told he didn't recognise his name and because we can't have any Bobby's here because of our Indi we chose him a new name.
We once had a foster dog called Bobby and the first time we stood in the kitchen and called his name to come in from the garden our Indi came charging from the living room, ears in the air, dancing around the kitchen with a bright look on her face as she scanned the area. She thought our Bobby was back. She loved him so much and we felt so awful that we've not allowed a foster dog with the name Bobby in the house since. It was heartbreaking to watch, and they say dogs don't remember!!
Nero is a big handsome lad who fractured the radius and ulna in his front right leg. The vet plated and repaired the leg, and he's had physio, but the vet wouldn't sign him back on to race again, thus him coming to us so we can find him a new home.
During the 6 weeks or so with the plate on his leg he was muzzled, this has removed some of the hair on his nose and cheeks, so his face looks a bit patchy, but this will grow back in time.
17th April 2014
This morning Nero went to the vet to be neutered and where he weighed in at 35.3k.
21st April 2014
It was a lovely day today so Stuart took photos of all the dogs and we got some lovely ones of Nero.
25th April 2014
When Nero first arrived it used to worry me him running around our garden with all the raised bed rock, banks and uneven surfaces in case anything happened to his leg. However, I am certain it is a lot stronger than I anticipate, and he knows his limitations in that respect because although he runs with the others he doesn't charge about or race as they do.
My heart nearly missed a beat when I first saw him coming down the 'shortcut' path the others have made through the low vegetation down the bedrock bank at the back of our house. Deep down I wished he wouldn't follow them and take the long way round, and, the correct way back down to the house. I've got used to seeing him doing it now, but it was rather scary at the beginning. I suppose I was being over protective towards him because I must admit I do have a soft spot for him.
26th May 2014
All the hair has grown back on the side and front of Nero's face where it had been rubbed off by the muzzle while his leg was mending, and some of the hair loss on the joints of his tail are almost back to normal. His hair is nice and shiny now and he looks quite stunning.
20th June 2014
Well Nero's tail is now as it should look with hair all the way down and his coat is looking beautiful.
28th July 2014
What a super lad Nero is - he does exactly the same as my lovely Solo used to do. He's worked out that when he comes in the house from the garden, instead of running straight in as the others do if he waits by the door near to where I am standing I will give him a stroke and a cuddle for a couple of minutes before walking back inside. He did it a little to begin with, but now he does it almost every time.
13th August 2014
Yesterday Nero went to the fence of the balcony and spent time visiting our bed and breakfast guests staying in room 1 who were stroking and feeding him treats.
This morning after breakfast we brought him in the conservatory to meet them properly with their greyhounds. He said hello to the other dogs and began mingling with them. The door to the guest sitting room was shut and the little gate between the hall and conservatory was open and Nero wandered around there to see what was what amongst the other dogs. He's not normally allowed in that part of the house!
First we heard a clang where he'd very carefully taken one b & b business card from the rack on the shelf tipping the others out,. Having put those back I then noticed something pink in his mouth - he's taken a frut teabag from the basket and was wanting to go outside with it. Although the packet was a little damp, our guest said she would have that as she liked that flavour and she drank it later.
While we were still talking he then brought her one of the guest dog mats from the basket in the hall, which we put back to find he going back and coming back with it again. This time our guest held it only to find him coming to her again with another one. It was all so funny, he was somewhere new with lots of new things to discover. he is a real character!
25th October 2014
This afternoon the family interested in re-homing Nero came to visit him. I thought they were just coming to see him and to decide if he was the one for them, but no, they wanted him, and they wanted to take him home with them.
Even though all the checks had been made I wasn't expecting him to go this afternoon, I suppose it's because we've had about five other families interested in him and as soon as they saw his leg they decided upon another dog, so perhaps I expected it to happen again. His sudden departure left me somewhat at a loss. I thought the world of Nero and would have been happy to have kept him here, so the speed at which he went to his new home came as a bit of a shock!
Anyway, he walked off with them to their car, climbed in and off he went to his new home where we hope he has a long and happy life with his new family.
We heard this evening that Nero is settling in to his new home, he had a good journey, walked round the garden, fed and watered, and is now relaxing ! His new owners say they love him, which I can fully understand.
1st November 2014
We heard this evening that Nero is well and settling in. He went to the vets today for a check-up and they were very happy with him.
3rd November 2014
Following a post I put on Facebook Nero's new owner came on and said "He's a character, we love Nero and he's settled in very well".
3rd March 2015
We heard today via Facebook that Nero is doing great.
